My sincere thanks to...
all those who attended the launch on September 26, 2018. I had dreamed of a full-house (Gorge-ous Coffee can seat 35, and accommodate 50 total) - but when more than 130 people showed up, I was stunned. It was an evening I'll never forget. My brother Claude and sister-in-law Lynn even came from Toronto!

In a darkened cinema a little boy laughs at a Marx Brothers’ movie and spits out roasted pumpkin seed shells. The next day, in fields near the Salerno War Cemetery, he and his friends gather empty rifle shells. They will sell these to the scrap dealer who visits the refugee camp where they live.
From a boisterous extended Italian family living under one roof, the Nazarko family became “displaced persons” at the end of World War II. For four years the family moved from one refugee camp to another, before emigrating to Canada in 1951. With few possessions and little money, Aldo's parents still managed to forge a good childhood for their three sons. This memoir is a testament to their resourcefulness and devotion. At its heart, A River of Oranges is a love letter from one man to his father – full of forgiveness, shining with joy, and brimming with tender gratitude. |
about the bookA River of Oranges is the result of my curiosity about the history of my family, and that of the remarkable city, Fiume, where I spent my early childhood.
After the Second World War, my family became "Displaced Persons" and we spent the next 4 years living in 10 different refugee camps. Despite the emotional and physical hardships, my parents' resourcefulness and love of family forged a decent childhood for my two brothers and me. A River of Oranges chronicles our family's post-war odyssey; but it's also about my relationship with my father, a man I always admired and sometimes loved. My name is Aldo Nazarko. I'm into my 16th year of hosting Off The Beaten Track, a weekly music radio show on CFUV from the University of Victoria. I also co-host the Sunday morning Italian radio show.
I live in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, with my wife Linda. We have a daughter, Lisa, and two grandchildren, Dylan and Carly. My fascination with history began at an early age and it continues unabated into my 84th year. This site contains a chapter excerpt from A River of Oranges, as well as photographs (many of which are not included in the book itself), and related links to historical events.
